4 Signs That it’s Time to Install a New Garage Door
As I go about my day in the Waterloo Region, whether its work, Rotary or family related, I often field lots of questions from folks about replacing their garage door. Of course, sometimes it’s just in an effort to create small talk, but more often than you think, people genuinely don’t know when or if they should replace their garage door or garage door opener. Here are 4 signs to consider as you weigh the decision. Of course if you wish to speak to an expert, call our team at Winser Doors and ask for sales, and they will happily assist you!
1. YOUR DOOR IS SHOWING SIGNS OF MAJOR WEAR AND TEAR
If your home has a wood garage door, look for things like rot, peeling paint, mold and mildew, significant cracking and separation of the wood components. Another thing to watch for is what the industry calls “smiling”, this is when the bottom of the door is no longer straight and sags in the middle. If you have a steel garage door, watch for rust, not surface rust, but rust that has penetrated through the steel into whatever substrate is there. Also, keep a keen eye out for metal fatigue. This is especially evident in non-insulated doors, which are out of balance and have strain placed on them by the opener. Finally, if you hit a door with your vehicle, it would be a good time to replace it.
2. YOU ARE REPAIRING THE DOOR INCREASINGLY FREQUENTLY
If you find that your garage door and opener aren’t working as smoothly as they once did and you are calling a Garage Door Technician for repairs on a semi-regular basis, eventually you will spend more money on garage door repairs and aggravation than a new garage door may cost.
3. YOU WANT TO UPGRADE THE TECH OR QUALITY OF THE DOOR
There is a lot of new technology out there, especially when it comes to Garage Door Openers. I blogged about this early this year and that would be a good place to start. Another reason to consider changing the door would be if you are altering the use of the garage area. Say a gym, a man cave, sewing room or other type of living space that you would heat all year round. Installing a new heavily insulated and properly sealed door with garage door weatherstrip, will ensure your comfort is greatly improved.
4. YOUR DOOR HAS ‘UGLIED OUT’
This is probably the biggest reason to people want to change the door. “My door is ugly, compared to the neighbours!” In Waterloo Region and most of Ontario, the curb appeal of houses built since the 1980s is pretty well driven by the garage doors. So it is a fact that a new garage door significantly improves the look of your home, and for a fraction of other renovations. With all the styles and new colours available you should plan a trip to our garage door showroom where we have 9 full garage doors and all the colours available! And the keen staff of Winser Doors to help out!
